POSITION OF THE CHURCH IN MALAKAL CONCERNING THE ONGOING CRISIS IN SOBAT RIVER COUNTIES

On 27th February 2025, Church leaders in the upper Nile state of Malakal convened a crucial meeting organised by the South Sudan Council of Churches Regional Office in Malakal Upper Nile State.

The urgent call for a meeting is a part of the Church’s broader effort to leverage its approach and role in addressing the ongoing situation in Malakal, Upper Nile causing fear and panic among citizens and surrounding areas of Baliet, Ulang, and Nasir.

About 20 Church leaders from the different denominations in Malakla town and PoC came together as the discussion was Chaired by His Lordship Bishop Stephen Nyodho Ador of the Catholic Church and SSCC Regional facilitator Mr Simon Ador Thon.

The church leaders stressed the following resolutions

1. We the churches leaders call for peaceful coexistence in upper state and urge the citizens to remain calm as brothers and sisters in Malakal town and beyond.

2. we have agreed to visit Ulang and Nasir through the help, of the government, the UMISS Civil Affairs office and other UN agencies in upper Nile state for peace dissemination.

3. we called upon the state government to continue providing security and protect the properties of the citizens in Upper Nile State.

4. We the church leaders have agreed to entrust the situation in Upper Nile in the hand of God through prayer and fasting in different Churches.

5. We have also resolved to meet and engage the traditional leaders in Malakal to actively contribute to social coexistence and harmony among the people of the state.

6. We have resolved to preach peace and reconciliation in our churches and through the Local Radios in upper Nile state

7. we call upon the citizens of Upper Nile to respect the laws of the State and amicably seek peaceful means to resolve their grievances.

8. We call upon NGOs, UN Agencies and UNMISS to continue partnership with South Sudan Churches Upper Nile Region in Peacebuilding process.

9. We the church leaders urge the politician to use constructive politics for the benefit of their citizens.
